FIRES

PALMEHSTON N., 26th Jan. Shortly after midnight, fire gutted the premises, in the main street, of Turner, tobacconist; and Skinner, mercer and clothier. The gooda were practically all destroyed. Turner's stock was insured for £1000, and the estimated loss -.is £750 Skinner's stock was insured for £3000, and he estimates the loss at about £1000, The building is the property of the Combs Estate. It carried insurances aggregating ■ £1500, and is valued at about £2000
WAIPAWA, 26th January. A motor shed and a lorry, the property of W. E. Reid, contractor, was totally destroyed by fire. The insurances on the lorry were £600 with the South British Company, and th 0 shed was insured with the British Traders Company for £100. '
INVERCARGILL, 25th Jan. A nr e broke out in the business premises occupied by the Household Supplies Company in Dee street this evening, but smart work by the brigade prevented its spread to" an adjoining shop. Ihe origin of the outbreak is unknown, the fire breaking, out in a room upstairs occupied by a bachelor. Stock in the shop was severely damaged by water. The building is owned by the estate of the iate John. Neil, of Dunedin
