THE SECOND RACE

SANDERS CUP CONTEST

SOUTHLAND SCORES A WIN.

The second race for the Sanders Cop ■was sailed yesterday afternoon, and resulted in a win f«r the Southland boat, Murihiku, after an interesting contest. The progress of the race around a triangular- course was watched by a large crowd of people* on the end of | the Clyde Quay Wharf and from vantage points, along the foreshore. The crews were as follow :— Rona (Auckland).—Messrs. J. Gifford (skipper), H. Brown, and V. Lidgard. i \ Konini (Hawkes Bay).—Messrs. Neil Gillies (skipper), I. Gillies, S. Gillies, and W. Anderson. Peggy (Wellington).—Messrs. E. Bailey (skipper), L. M'Gregor, J. Gendall, and A. G. Crawford. ' ■ \ Linnet (Canterbury).—Messrs. S. Sinclair (skipper), E. Sinclair, C. Williams, and W. Morton. June (Otago).—Messrs. G. Kellett (skipper), A. Booth, and A. Dawaon. Murihiku (Southland). —Mesrs. T. Bragg (skipper), W. Johnston, V. Bragg, and. L. Carstcnsen.

The course was three times around, starting from a line off Clyde Quay Wharf, thence to the Jemingham Buoy, thence to the Cbromandel Buoy, finish^ing at the starting line—a distance of about nine miles. All marks were kept on tie port hand. A fair wind ' blew from ' the east throughout the race. An excellent start was made at 3.24 p.m., June being the first to cross the line, followed by Konini, Peggy, Rona, Linnet, and Murihiku, the two last-named ' crossing practically at the same moment. Rona started to leeward of the next of the "field," Konini .being on the inner side of the line in towards Oriental Bay. The Auckland, Canterbury, Wellington, Nand Southland boats made a board out 'in to the harbour, the Hawkes Bay and Otago representatives seeking the other tack, where the latter lost the wind. Murihiku made a short tack towards the bay, and then made a board to the' north, gaining a very favourable position, and being the first to make the Jcrniugham Buoy, which she passed lmin Msec ahead of Linnet. -Peggy rounded the buoy lmin ssec, after the leading boat, 27sec ahead of Rona. Konini followed Bsec. later, and June turned the mark last, Smin 3sec separating her from the leading boat. The Hawkes Bay crew got their spinnaker into action before their Auckland opponents, and Canterbury lost time in tha operation. Linnet made a gain of about Bsec on theVrun with, the wind to the Coromandel Buoy, the boata turning the mark at the following intervals after Muriliiku, which still led:— Linnet lmin 26sec, Rona lmin 50sec, Peggy^2min 2sec, Konini 2min 13sec, and, June 4min 25sec. Half way across to the starting line Rona put on extra sail, and Murihiku follojved suit, when she saw her lead decreasing. Peggy and Konini did likewise a minute later. Murihiku completed the first sound 2min 22sec ahead of Konini.' An interesting dispute took place between Linnet, Peggy, and Rona for the next places in order. Peggy cut into windward in rounding, and the sthree turned within a second of one another, about 2min 40sec behind Murikiku. Twenty seconds later, June, sailing last, made the flag. ,

Some remarkable changes of position occurred-on the second time, round the course. On the lead up to Jerningham Peggy beat Konini into second place, while J "c, profiting by heir experience iii the t round, when she lost the wind through going too far into Oriental Bay, stood well out and gained fourth position, about three-quarters *f a minute in front of Linnet and almost a minute ahead of Rona, which turned the-buoy last. At the Coromandel mark \Feggy had reduced Murihiku's lead tol lmin 52sec, while Konini had gained about 17sec. June still held fourth running, but had pulled up considerably on the leader, while Linnet and Eona made the buoy close together, about three minutes separating them from the Southland representative. At the end cf the .round at Clyde Quay Wharf Konini had resumed her former position as second boat, while Peggy had dropped back fifth, Murihiku was followed around the flagged boat by the rest of the "field" at the following approximate intervals: —Konini lmin 41sec, June 2min 3sec, Rona 2min 32sec, Peggy 2min 42sec, Linnet 3min lsec.

Peggy, standing well out, resumed third place on the third run to Jerningham, her skipper apparently having superior knowledge of the harbour conditions, but at Coromandel she turned fourth. June again experienced a setback in Oriental Bay through losing the wind, but made up the lost distance creditably, being the third boat to turn the mark off Ngahauranja. The leading boats maintained their distances and the i race finished at the following times by the clock:— . ' Murihiku, shrs 42min. Konini shrs 43min. Kona, shrs 45min 436ec. June shrs 46min Peggy, shrs .47min 15sec. Linnet, shrs 47min 19sec.
