COUNCILLOR BOWDEN'S IDEAS

FOR EASTBOURNE.

The following notices of motion have been tabled by Councillor Bowden for consideration at the' next meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council:—

' That iri order to convert-the borough freehold fronting Oroua street and County road, which has been for a considerable time, and continues to remain, an impediment to the progress of the borough and ah eyesore to the populace, into a worthy reproductive municipal enterprise, the council hereby resolves to transfer the Municipal Chambers to ttie site recently acquired by the council adjoining the Municipal Pavilion. ■

That the situation of,the chainberk upon the said site be determined with due regurd to the ■ prospective requirements and extensions of the municipal pavilion adjoining, and any other prospective municipal enterprise in the nature of, for instance, croquet lawns, or children's playing area, or any other activities of attraction that in the foresight of the council may still further augment ferry revenue and benefit theI.district's funds.

That the valuable extensive area of municipal freehold upon which the council chambers are at present situated be subdivided and utilised to much greater advantage to the borough than at present, by way of security for loan from the State Advances Department, under Loans to Local Bodies Act, for flic purpose of erecting dwellings ther&ui. That the council's staff, both office and general, be given preference of occupation by way of application. In order to obviate friction or inconvenience with regard to shifts, those applicants whose duties at the Eastbourne terminus necessitate residence within the borough, rective first consideration.

If, after providing for the* requirements <ff the latter portion of the foregoing preference clause, the number of applicants exceeds the number of dwellings available, the balance, after such provision is made, be submitted by ballot to the ''■:remaining applicants.
