FORESTRY LEAGUE

COUNCIL MEETING!.

A meeting of the council of the New Zealand 1' orestry League was held on lhursday evening. Mr. A. L. Hunt presided. , ■•>.*■-

At a previous meeting of the league it was decided to make representations to the Senate of the University to provide facilities for tho training of officers m forestry, and to the Minister of Education to provide tho n.ecessary financial assistance. Replies were received to the effect that the matter would be considered by the Senate next month, and that the Government would give due. consideration to the representations made. It was decided to arrange a deputation to wait upon the • Ministers of Finance and Forestry with a view to placing be--1.1 , Government the necessity for establishing a forest purchase fund to enable the State to secure available forests for conservation, scenic, and commercial purposes. Members of the Wellington branch of the league will be apked to join the deputation. A,resolution was passed expressing appreciation of the remarks of tho Hon. J. U. Coates, Minister of Native Affairs respecting the Urewera country, and the nope that the Government will not pursue the insensate polioy of the past by ruining good forests to.make poor farms. Mr. Hunt drew the council's attention to the almost complete elimination of bird life in the forests of Westland. This had been frequently remarked upon by tho members of the business men's recent tour of the West Coast. It was decided to bring tho matter before the ±Sird Protection Society, and (ie following resolution was passed :—"That this league will support the Bird Protection Society in representations to ask for the abolition of the protection of stoats and weasels and suggests that a combined deputation of all bodies interested should be arranged to place the matter before the Government."

It was reported that efforts were bein" made to establish branches of the league in Hawkes Bay and Rangitikei.
