SYDNEY HEARS BROADCAST PLAY

For the first time in Australia a legitimate stage play has been broadcasted. The first test, took place on Thursday evening, 3rd January, and furthe-*' tests were carried out on the next two days, Friday and Saturday. Messrs. 1. C. Williamson, Ltii, hold the distinction of being the first theatrical firm in Australia to have one of their productions broadcasted. . The play, "A Southern Maid," at Her Majesty's Theatre, Sydney, was the performance selected for the tests. Farmer and Company, of Sydney, hold the distinction of being the first to actually Vbroadcast a musical ,play in Australia. It was from their high-power broadcasting station, 2FC, at Willoughby, that the transmissions were so successfully effected. That the transmissions were perfect is evidenced by the fact that every word spoken and sung on the stage was plain-,, ly audible, as well as the music and the applause from the audience. These tests open up a very wide field of possibilities for broadcasting in Australia. '. The man on the land, hundreds of miles from the city and nearest theatre, now has the prospect, by means of a broadcasting receiver, of being able to j sit at home after his day's toil and listen to the i productions at Her Majesty's, The Criterion, or any other theatres that are, connected up to the transmitting station, as well as the general programme.
