MAN LET GO BY SPECIAL POLICE.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT.) MELBOURNE, 24th January. The whole city continues to he in a hue and cry after the perpetrator of "the Gardens tragedy, who is still at large. From the little information which the police are able to secure from eye-wit-nesses of the tragedy they have issued a description of the'man. He is aged 3b, tall and thin, with projecting, dirty teeth, and a peculiar twitching of the upper lip. He is dressed in a navy blue slop suit. This morning the police discovered a dirty rifle and a box of 20 unused cartridges in the shrubbery near where the murderer was seen to leap the fence. The description tallies with that of the man whom the two special constables interviewed last night and allowed to depart. They heard that a fight had taken place in the gardens, went to investigate, and met the man coming out. They asked him if he had seen a man with a shotgun. He replied in' the negative. He said that he was taking a stroll, and walked off towards the city.
