WELLINGTON RACING CLUB

SECOND DAY-iS SPORT

NOTES ON THE RUNNING.

The Metropolitan Club's Summer Meeting was continued at Trentham yesterday. The inclement state of the weather in the city in the forenoon somewhat affected the attendance,' which was thin compared with that on the holiday. The conditions at the course were much better than in town. Rain threatened, but kept off, and a cold southerly wind which blew, across the course during the afternoon had a touch of winter in it, and overcoats and wraps were in general use. During the afternoon the sum of £44,368 10s was passed through the totalisator, which must be regarded as very satisfactory under the circumstances. Last year the second day of the meeting fell on Anniversary Day, and although the weather was Vret tho sum of' £63,699 10s .was handled. A BICCARTON WINNER. There were eight runners for the High Weight Handicap, two more than on tho opening day. The fresh horses were Eonmark, Manchester, and Enare. The two South Island representatives, Palairion and Enare, carried most money. Palamon was prominent for about twothirds of the journey, where he lost his position, and, gradually falling back, finished in the "ruck. Enare, who was always well placed, ran the distance out j well under his light weight, and managed to stall off a good finishing run by Carawock, the first day's winner. Vagabond again finished third, and Malingerer did best of the others. Enare (Sunny Lake—Stepka) is half-brother to the Wellington jCup winner Pavlova. He is owned by Mr. Frank Griffen, of Christchurch, who generally has a horse or two in training. The Trentham representative Manchester , was at the tail end of the field all the way. JANUARY WELTER TO PASSIONLESS. Backers went solidly for Kinsem for the January Welter Handicap, but she failed to reproduce her first day's form. Ardour essayed the role of pace-maker,' being assisted, by Passionless and Kao'Tane in the first part. When Ardour cried enough at the home turn Prince Ferouz tried to overtake Passionless. The last-named, who had previously been seen at her best over six furlongs, saw the distance out well and Won handsomely from Prince' Ferouz, who was unlucky enough to be similarly, placed behind*- Suggestion on the opening day. Kerb and Ardour did best of the others. Passionless was unplaced in the Anniversary Handicap on the opening day, and' a change of; riders was tried yesterday with good effect. Her owner put up half a stone overweight to secure Gray's services. She is trained by E. W. Watson at Awapuni for her breeder, Mr. W. C. Vincent, and this was about her best performance to date. GOOD PERFORMANCE BY ' GAILLARD. Killocra was the only defection, from the Nursery Handicap, leaving in a good field of fourteen runners. f ßachaeland Lady Bentinck, place-getters behind Nigger Minstrel yon the opening day, we're the actual favourites. Rachacl was ■ well enough placed on the outside of the field in the early part, but failed to see it out. The colours of Lady Bentinck were always prominent. She was going^ strong at the head of affairs at the distance, but was headed in the run to1* the post by Gaillard, who won decisively. The light-weighted Bonideer and Siaosi were closest to the other, pair at the finish. Among the also-started division was Falladeen, who may be improved with the race. Gaillard Was outclassed in the Wellington Stakes, but is evidently useful in his class, as he carried top weight when he won yesterday. He was among the winners at Manawatu and Marton, and has proved a cheap purchase to the New Plymouth owner, Mr. A. Alexander, at 800 guineas. A WELLINGTON-OWNED WINNER. Backers were all astray in trying to select the winner of the Trial Plate. Most money was forthcoming for K.oauau, Glimpse, and Hall Mark. Ajax jumped out best, but gave way to Sir PamiWhen theyMiad gone a furlong, and the field .was well strung out. Hall Mark was with the leader when they turned for home, and appeared to have la, good winning chance, which was extinguished by running out wide and finishing under the judge's box. . Entre Nous put in a claim at the distance, but could make no impression on Sir Pam, who won comfortably. Glimpse, who. wag tried oVer a "distance for the firsttime, was in third place. The favourite was never prominent, and Desert Knight and Lady Gay were always ( well back. Sir Pam won at Otaki in the spring, and also ran a good race behind Imperial Spark on the second day. He is trained at Awapuni by R. E. Hatch for Mr. W. Higgins, a steward of the club. The latter does not win out of, his turn, and the win was popular. ' RACING CLUB HANDICAP TO GOLD LIGHT. Gold Light, Roseday, and Limelight were the popular picks for the Racing Club Handicap, in a field of fourteen. Roseday, on the outside, jumped out well, but was steadied, and going out of_ the straight Enthusiasm, Gold Light, Highland, and Diamond Ring were at the head of affairs.' Cold Steel, who acted as pacemaker in the Cup, was last when they reached the mile post. Gold Light gave way to the light-weight-ed Diamond Ring racing along/the back. The pair named were in the van with half _ the journey^ covered, where Enthusiasm, Scion, and Limelight were also well placed. When Diamond Ring stopped at the top of the straight Gold Light went on, and, , finishing up in great style, Won with something in hand from Enthusiasm, with Roseday close up, third, and Highland, who showed a glimpse of his best form, fourth. The next to finish were Bonetter, Mantua, and Cold Steel. The last two to pass the post were Merry Day and Palestrina. Enthusiasm came over on to Roseday when the latter was making his' run. ■ This may have affected the top weight's chance, but in any case it is doubtful if he could have beaten Gold Light at the weights. Gold Light and Enthusiasm are pretty evenly matched. They dead-heated in the Oaks last season, and in yesterday's race there was a pound between them. FENELOPHON WINS DOURO CUP. The Douro Cup has become quite as popular a mile race as the Thompson Handicap in the autumn. . There were twenty runners in yesterday's race. The ! popular picks were Star Ranger and White Comet, both of whom failed to get in tho money. Geranial delayed the start for some time by jumping through ; tho tapes. When they were dispatched I ih« colour* of lhapotoa and White Comet

were prominent at the head of the field. Pantagruel and White Comet took . a liand in the pace-making at the six furlongs, and with the journey gone I'antagruel, Last Crust, Zero Hour, and Ihapotoa were the leading division. Pantagruel was done with at the distance, where Penelophon joined Zero Hour and, finishing best, won nicely. Last Crust was next, and Ihapotoa did well to get fourth, as Oliver Jtried to get him through on the rails and was stopped below the distance. The Trentham pair, Basso and Vindictive, were next to Ihapotoa. Star Banger finished well back, and White Comet's failure was a disappointment to his followers. Penelophon is a full sister to Anomaly, and is a stable mate of Gold Light. "Both tnese horses are trained by Stuart Waddell at Greenmeadows. Penelophon is owned by Mr. J. D. Ormond, whose colours (cerise jacket) were so well known on Dominion courses when carried by horses owned by | his | father, the late Hon. J. D. Ormond. The local owners, Messrs. Goodman and Ballinger, nearly brought off a good stake with their 50 guineas purchase, Zero Hour. DEFEAT OF GLENTRUIN. There were eleven runners for the Metropolitan Handicap, after Martian Miss and Economist, a stable mate of Glentruiu, were withdrawn. The last named was a big favourite. Rational j and Mireusonta (the latter making his first appearance v at the-meeting) were also solidly supported. The lightweighted Civility was rushed to the front, and had such a good lead when the course proper was reached that she looked unbeatable. She tired in the last furlong, and Glentruin was the first to overhaul her. The latter in turn was challenged by Santonio, who had only 6.7 to carry and was kicked out by W. S. Bagby, and worried the top-weight out of it. Civility was third and Queen March was fourth. Some of the backers of Civility, not in a _ position ', to see, thought she was second, and voiced their opinion. It is regrettable that the demonstration was made by inside patrons, as there was no doubt whatever about the correctness of the official placings, and the owner of Civility was quite satisfied and expressed himself so to the noisy ones. Solfanello was among the runners and finished ..well. back. Santonio, who won at Trentham last winter, is owned by Messrs. O'Reilly and Trevor, of Palmerston North, and trained by A. Oliver. Santonio Was recently advertised for sale to dissolve the partnership, but failed to find a purchaser. He was the third Awapuni-trained horse to win during the afternoon. CAMP HANDICAP TO BUGLE NOTE. Giantkiller was withdrawn from the Camp Handicap, leaving in eleven runners. Backers went for the imported filly Piquant and Bugle Note, runner-up to Merit on Tuesday. Piquant was out in front for five furlongs, but failed to see the journey out. When she stopped, Bugle Note went' on and won decisively from Kilris, who only beat Parorangi, on whom Gray declared about a stone overweight, by the narrowest margin for second money and dividend. On the opening day Kilris ran in;the colours of Mr. W. R. Kemball, but yesterday she carried^ those of her trainer,' B. Burgess. She ,was ridden by a more experienced horseman, and those that stuck to her got a better-price than backers of the winner. Piquant struggled on into fourth place. Thurles and Orchid appeared to be well placed in the first part, but failed at the right end. Bugle Note carried top weight, and now that he has struck form he" may go on winning. He is one of the useful Solferino tribe, trained by J. T. Jamieson at Wcodville for Mr. A. M'Donald, the well-known Wairarapa owner. . . I.
