CINEMA AND WIRELESS

NEW SOUTH WALES SCHOOLS

It is probable that before the end of the present year wireless and the cinema will both be permanently established 'in the State schools in New South Wales as part of the educational system. The Teachers' Federation has been pressing the Minister to recognise wireless as an arm of the educational service, and Mr. Bruntnell is calling a conference to discuss the best and quickest means of giving effect to the proposal. One of the broadcasting firms has offered to assist in advancing the scheme. The feeling is that by means of wireless and the cinema the State schools in outback and remote centres, for instance, can be made centres of social interest, thus bringing the parents and the citizens generally into closer- and more sympathetic touch with the work of the teachers and the Educational Department. The question is also being considered of establishing ' country university classes, and of enabling the students to "listen-in" at broadcasted university lectures delivered in Sydney. As far as the cinema is concerned, it is believed that it might be utilised/ very effectively, especially in the teaching of geography and natural history. .
