DESPERATE FINANCES
POSITION IN TASMANIA.

HOBART, 23rd January.. In the Assembly, the Premier delivered the Budget. The estimated deficit, including last year's, at ,30th June, will be £595,000. It is proposed by new taxation to raise £128,000, whereof £69,000 will be from increased income levies. This, with an additional £115,000 allowed by the Federal Government, is expected to square accounts.
The Premier (the Hon. J. B. Hayes) declared that the State's financial position was desperate. Further, reorganisation of the departments and additional economies were essential. He urged a bold policy of immigration and development of new mining and other resources.
