LONDON, 23rd January
On the whole, • the personnel of the first Labour Government meets a remarkably sympathetic reception, even the extreme Conservative organs ,are notably silent regarding predictions of disaster. The papers generally, including the Rothermere and Beaverbrook ariti-Sobial-ist Press, give a blessing .tol the, new experiment. In. a large degree its popularity is undoubtedly due to the diverse and wellbalanced nature of the Ministry, which comprises -trade unionists and "intelligentsia" in somewhat equal .proportions, with a good leavening of experienced administrators, several of whom\ are new accessions to the Labour ranks,'including. Viscount Chelmsford, who is Btii nomin' ally a Conservative Peer, while, except for Mr. Wheatley, who is probably a hostage for the good behaviour of the Clyde extremists, • tho complexion of the Ministry is decidedly moderate.
Surprise is expressed at the non-in-clusion Of women, but amends for that ■will probably be found in the list of Under-Secretaries. Mr. MacdonaldV list necessitates at least one new peerage in conformity with the law requiring at least one Secretary-of-State to sit in the House of Lords. This will probobly bs Sir Sydney Olivier.
