MOTORISTS FINED

PETONE SPEED LIMITS

Each race day traps are.laid by the .fetone borough officials to test the speed of motorists passing through the borough; which has two speed limits in the stretch of the Hutt toad which passes through the town. The s first stretch lies between the railway crossing at the entrance to the town and Petone avenue. In this distance lie the entrances to the,, Petone-railway workshops the Petbne railway station, and %he West-End Public School, and in consequence the borough authority has-l fixed, the speed limit at 15 miles per; hour. The balance of the road has a speed limit of 20 miles per hour The speed limit on the Hutt road between Ngahauranga and Petone is 25 miles per hour, and some motorists are I of opinion that they have a grievance in i the sudden reduction of the speed limit from 25 to 15 miles per hour. It is alleged that, though it .is admitted that ' the notice of the reduction is prominent enough, the attention of motorists is so much engaged in safely negotiating the railway'crossing that they fail to see the notice. .' ■■ v _ Another" reason, however, is alleged for motorists failing to keep within bounds on this stretch, and that is that during the last year this strip of road has been very greatly improved, and ; there is no doubt that the smooth running tempts motorists to accelerate. In order to satisfy themselves that' the trapping is justly done,'a member of the Automobile Association is present at each trap to check the taking of the times. . 1 The results of trapping on Tuesday ' last seem to prove that, mdtorists are exercising more care, as "while the result of the three days' racing last October was a crop vof 75 cases, Tuesday' 8 traps caught only seven or eight offend- . The final batch of cases from the October races was before Mr. C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., at the local Court I yesterday. ... . | •The fines were" graded according to the speed travelled, unless some extenuating circumstances We advanced Ihe penalties were :—H. D. T.
