WELLINGTON IN A GOOD

POSITION.

(BI TBIBGRATH.—TRBSS ASSOCIATION.)

DUNEDIN, 22nd January

The match between Otago and Wellington for the Plunket Shield was continued to-day. Tha weather was ! threatening, and from 5 o'clock moderate rain fell. Wellington's second innings produced 465 runs. Then Otago went-in, requiring 641 to win. When stumps were drawn for the day five wickets had' fallen for 371. The side faced the huge task with great spirit, and has just a possible chance of yet winning. The aggregate score for the match is already 227 ahead of the previous record. Otago played brilliant cricket, getting the runs in 270 minutes. Worker and Shepherd opened forty minutes before the luncheon adjournment. Both scored rapidly, Shepherd's 'driving to the off and to the boundary being brilliant; he also glanced several pretty shots to leg. Worker scored freely through the slips, and they ran for\ short hits, and at the adjournment had pub. on 100 runs for forty pinufces'. play. The scoring was not quite so fast in the afternoon. One hundred and fifty went up for eighty minutes' play; then Shepherd was clean bowled by Brice at 92. Shepherd certainly let himself go, and gave an exhilarating display. 155—1—92. ,By the time the partnership was severed the Plunket Shield record aggregate score of 1554 had been broken. Blamires joined Worker, and got into the thirties in next to no time. He was playing aggressively ■ and confidently, when, in trying to glance one to leg, he put it into James's hands. 208—2— 36. i : ■ "■■.•■- . ■•■ ;. ■ j ■•■;■/ Worker was joined by M'Mullan, and the runs • mounted steadily, 230 being up by the tea adjournment: , M'Mullah scored, faster than his partner, who. reached 92 in about twice the time it took' Shepherd to put on that many runs.
