AMATEUR ATHLETICS

NEW ZEALAND TEAM

ROSE MAY BE A MEMBER.

There is now every prospect of the New Zealand amateur athletic team being at full strength ..for the Australasian championships at Hobart next month; Messrs. A. T. Davies (chairman of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Council) and. A. C. Kitto were present at the athletic meeting in Masterton yesterday, and made a further effort to arrange for E. A. Rose, the distance runner, to make the trip to Hobart. As a result it is now practically certain that Rose will go with the party. Definite word regarding Lewis, of Canterbury, is being awaited, but it is understood that he is keen to make the trip. If A sum of £25 is obtained from Canterbury he will go. There is every chance, therefore, that New Zealand will have a team in the relay race. The funds necessary to send G. Harvey (Wairarapa), M'Kenzie (Otago), J. M'Holm (Canterbury), and L. A. Tracy ■(Wellington) have been secured, and those athlefrs, with H. E. Wilson and P. Munro, are certain to represent New Zealand. An unfortunate position has arisen regarding S! G. M'lntosh, the Wellington walking champion. An effort was being made locally to secure the money necessary to send him as a representative, but in view of the New Zealand Council's action in choosing M'Kenzie, of Otago, as a member of the team, subject to a sum of £25 being found by Otago, the local enthusiasts, who have been interesting themselves in the question of raising the money/to cover M'lntosh's expenses, are, it is understood, taking no further action, as they consider that it is useless to send two walkers. That M'Kenzie is making the trip is definite, word to that effect having been received from Dunedin. It is considered locally that M'Intosh was entitled to a place in the team before the Otago man. Rose was in Masterton to-day, and, according to advice from there this afternoon, the distance runner had not stated definitely that he would leave with the New Zealand team on Friday.
