CHILDREN'S DAY
AT NEWTOWN PARK
WELCOME WEEK CELEBRATIONS.
It was indeed Children's Day at Newtown Park yesterday afternoon and evening, when, in connection with the Welcome Week festivities, sport and amusement of an endless variety was provided for the benefit of the small but enthusiastic merry-makers. JSo entrance fee Was charged for any of the events, and the only qualification needed was to be a youngster and wear, a smile. Less interest could not have been taken in the competitions had championships been at stake, and every event was well patronised, and fought to a finish. ■'. The pillow-fighting was particularly popular among the boys.
Very satisfactory entries were received for the baby show, ■ and, as usual, despite the opinion of the judges, "Boy" still remained the pride of his mother's heart, and the "finest kid in the world," irrespective of his capabilities as a prize-winner.
Prisoners were tried in the same ridiculous manner for the same old offences, at a Mock Court, held in theevening, and the sideshows and special tents again received the attention of the public. Jazzing' on the green was indulged in to the tune of lively selections played by the Port Nicholson Band.
