EMPRESS THEATRE.

Pictures and music are again featured at the Empress Theatre, where an admirable programme was introduced yesterday. The story of "Potash and Perlmutter" is too well known to require treatment, but the screen version brings another aspect altogether. The gestures of the Jewish partners in the readymade dressmaking concern in New York are more eloquent than words, and Barney Bernard and Alex. Carr' handle the parts with rare discrimination, while Vera Gordon, of "Humoresque" fame, acts with that sympathy and charm which characterises her "mother" roles. The trials and tribulations of the two members of the firm, their domestic felicity and trials, the love of the Russian violinist for ■Iraia- Potash, the quarrelsome affection oi the partners, all make a delightfully real and natural play. The cast is splendid, and they blend merriment and sadness perfectly. "Potash and Perlmutter" is a film to be seen and appreciated. The twelve Ziegfeld Follies beauties who figure in the cas\ are radiant in their ballets and dances.' The Empress News film is newsy and chatty,. and_ a comedy, "The Skipper's Sermon," is genuinely amusing. A musical interlude by Phyllis and Sammy Cope (late of Linn Smith's jazz band) is a complete novelty." They opened with the duet "Nightingale," following with "Dancemania," "full of weird effects, and also included'the new American dance craze, "Cut Yourself a Piece of Cake." Their turn is original and diverting. Mr. M. Dixon's orchestra provides' lilting selections, featuring the "Pique Dame" overture.
