FIRE IN NEWTOWN

Shortly after 6 o'clock this morning, the- Fira Brigade received a call to the premises at 93, Biddiford street, a twostoried shop with five residential rooms, occupied by John Campbell, a hairdresser and tobacconist. The occupants Were sleeping in the upper 7 portion of the building, and it is stated that they were very,; fortunate to escape, as, when luckily they were called by a milkman, the smoke and flames had almost filled the stairway. The washhouse and kitchen were damaged by fire, . and three other rooms were affected by the heat and smoke. The ■ furniture and stock .are covered by two policies in the Guardian Office to the extent of £1000, and the premises are owned by Mr. George Bayliss, of Island Bay.
