The ? main reservoirs at Wainui are holding out well, the levels remaining fairly satisfactory, but all the same the officers of the waterworks department keep one eye steadily upon the weather. Should the exceptionally dry spell continue much longer it is probable that the stream flow will drop away considerably, and in that case the city will quickly eat into the storage. It has been suggested that the Corporation has no power to prohibit the use of hoses by persons whose supply is measured by meter, and inquiries upon that point were made by a "Post" reporter this morning. The council, it was pointed out, has ample power to do so under the bylaws, which. provide in regard to "extraordinary water supply" that the Corporation may impose such restrictions, by the passing of a resolution, as was done at the last meeting of the council. If the water level in tha storage dams continues to fall, then there will be nothing for it but to act upon the authority given. Several more prosecutions, by the way are pending against people who have been hosing without' a meter, and a remark of the Magistrate who dealt with the last batch may be interesting, not to those whose cases are now pending but to others who may persist in' spite of warnings given, which remark was to the effect that fines would be stiffened up considerably unless the practice wa stopped.
