DANNEVIRKE RACING CLUB

SUMMER MEETING

NOTES ON THE SPORT.

CBI TBLEGEAfH.) 'mou "g« lakciioi."> FEILDING, 12th December. The Dannevirke Bacing Club's Summer Meeting opened to-day in favourable weather. Rain in the morning improved the racing track, which waa getting hard. The sum of £13,438 pawed through the machine, againat £17,769 for the corresponding meeting two years ago. MARIA OF HEREFORD BEST MAIDEN. Fire withdrawals from the Maiden Plato reduced the number of runners to fifteen. Maria of Hereford was favouilite. Maungaronga, next to the rails, began beit, and was prominent with Patearau and Deborah for a furlong, when Bonnie Louisa joined the leader. At the home bend the favourite was fourth. She tcok charge half-way down the straight, and won handily by half a length from Deborah, with Wilderness and Mountain Top next. This was Maria of. Hereford's second appearance. She is trained at Woodville by J. T. Jamieson, for Mr. J. Gleeson, of Auckland, who yras present to see her win. Considering the size of the field she paid a ridiculously short price. Maria of Hereford is engaged at Ellerslie.

JUMPERS' FLAT TO EMPYREAN. Malingerer, Antler, and Sling Camp were taken out of the Jumpers' Flat, leaving,in five runners. The top-weight, Vagabond, finished up favourite. It was a clow-run race in the frest part, Vagabond being allowed to lead past the stand. Six furlongs from home Empyrean went out and showed the way to Captain Sarto along the book. Vagabond put in a claim in the straight, but failed to reach Empyrean, who won with something in hand. Captain Sarto was a fair third 7 and Manchester fourth. The winner paid a great price' for a five-horse race.

LADY ISINGLASS "WINS TWO-YEAR-OLD. Tutankhamen and Bright Sol were withdrawn from the Tiratu Juvenile Handicap, leaving in eight runners. Lady Isinglass was made a short-priced favourite. Prior to the start, La Crecy got away with her rider, and galloped a couple of rounds before she could be pulled up. Lady Isinglass played up at the post, but eventually got away well. In the, first part she showed the way to La Crecy, who was done with at the bend. At the top of the straight Boa Marchs went out after the leader, who lasted l6ng enough to win by threeparts^of a length. Silver Shadow beat Solraid'for third' place. Augusta Victoria finished about a furlong behind the others. The winner carried more than half the amount invested on the race, and paid a ridiculously short price.

TAMAKI HACK HANDICAP GOES TO! WAETEA. There were nine runners for the Tamaki Hack Handicap after The Author was taken out. They included Maungaronga, who had contested the Maiden earlier in., the day. Backers made a good pick in selecting Arataura and Waetea as the best of them. Kilcoo jumped out well, .but had not gone a furlong when Waetea took charge. She was first into the straight,, where Arataura challenged. Waetea finished gamely, and reached the post with a little to spare., AH Gold defeated Mangawhero for third place. Import finished up fifth after getting left, owing to his rider trying to anticipate the rise of the barrier. Waetea i 3 trained afc Levin by W. Young for Mr, W. H. Ballinger, of Wellington.

NEA-G-LE MEMOHIAL "WON BY CROWN STAR. i Ngata was the only scratching for the Neagle Memorial. Ngata's owner was present. He informed the writer that the horse would probably be at Waipa on Saturday. Admiral Codrington and Trespass were the popular picks. Megan. Kilbird, Admiral Codrington, and Beloved were in charge passing the stand. They raced in pairs along the back, Kilgour and Crown Star being together just in front of Trespass, who was last. At the home bend Crown Star ran through the outside of the field, took charge at the distance, and won comfortably from' Trespass. Megan beat Admiral Codrington for third place. Beloved and Kilbii'd were last. Crown Star won on the opening day at Woodville, and looked ah improved horse. He earned the colours of his breeder, Sir George Hunter (patron of the club), who was present to see him win. BUAHINE "WELTER. Brigadier Bill and Big Chief were withdrawn from the Ruahine Welter, leaving in twelve runners. They included Mangawhero, Empyrean, and Bonnie Louisa, who were making their second appearance. Backers went for Swallow Flight and Radiac. Wheel, on the rails, was in front for a little while, until Awangawanga took charge. Eacing along the back he had the field well strung out, Mangawhero being next then Swallow Flight, Radiac, and Bonnie Lonisa. There was practically little alteration in the positions until th? straight was reached. Eadiac made a forward move at the distance, and, finishing best, won comfortably from Mangawhero, with Awangawanga and Good Mark next. Swallow Flight failed to nm up to expectations. Radiac is a full brother to Wamba, and this was his first win. It is also the first success for A. D. Webster's Otaki stable this season. *'

OPEN SPRINT EAOE. All the ten acceptors for the Otanga Handicap were paraded. Island and Good Sport, whose riders claimed 51b allowance, came in for most support. Island, next the rails, jumped out well, and had Waipatu, Still Sea, and Passionless as his nearest attendants racing along the back. At the bend Good Sport moved up into fourth place. Ha took charge in the straight, and, after a good finish, got the verdict from. Waipatu, with Island, Passionless, and Martian Mies next. Good Sport is a halfbrother to Chortle, by the defunct sire Polydamon. He is trained at Hastings by V. H. Colello. / OBINGI WELTER. Beloved was taken out of the Oringi Welter Handicap, leaving in five' runners. Helen Bufus was a good favourite, but went down short in the preliminary. Battle Night acted as pace-maker all the way, and lasted long enough to win, after an interesting contest with First Salute; Malingerer was close up, third, and then came Bumptious. Helen Rufus was.last. '; ■ . „..'
