SPORTS FOR THE SCHOOLS

ANNUAL ATHLETIC CHAMPION. SHIPS

SUCCESSFUL MEETING AT BASIN RESERVE.

A striking picture of health and vitality was to be seen at the Baßin Reserve yesterday, when the chosen boys and girls from the various public schools in the Wellington city and nearby districts engaged in the annual sports championships, under the management of the Wellington Public Schools Amateur Athletic Association. The popularity of amateur athletics in the schools was clearly demonstrated by the exceptionally large entries,, the keenness with .which the boys and girls entered into the contests, and the general spirit of enthusiasm in competition on the sporty arena, and in play on the paths and slopes of the reserve. It was 'a great day ; for the children, of whom there were some thousands present at the Reserve, as well as for the adults who visited the ground during the day. The gathering, so large as to necessitate a great amount of organisation, "was managed in a commendable manner, and the large number of events were decided without a hitch. Those children chosen to represent their respective schools were assembled in sections along the eastern slopes of the ground, and at a given call proceeded to the main ground to take their places on the marks as soon as the starter was ready for them. The contests were varied and interesting. In addition to honours in the various events, the competitors were also bent upon honours for their schools, a school's championship being held in connection with the gathering. Taken on the whole the sports were even more successful than those previously held. .The principal officials were as follow :—President, Mr. A. 0. Blake; hon. secretary, Mr. W. Binet Brown;, hon. treasurer, Mr. P. M. Jackson; starters, Messrs. T. W. Leslie and J. o'Sullivan; boys' maTshall, Mr. G. R. Kidson; girls' marshal, Mr. W. H. Foster; competitors' official, Mr. W. H.
