TRAM, WATER, AND PARK QUESTIONS

PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION MEETS.

The quarterly meeting of the Karori Progressive Association was held in tne old Council Chambers, Karori, on Monday. Mr. W. A. Andrews presided. The report on the activities of the association since the last quarterly meeting mentioned, among other matters, that the Gas Company had advised that it had been decided to lay the gas mains to Karori as soon as pipes could be obtained from England. _ In reply to the request for the erection of a slot telephone at the cemetery corner, the Postmaster-General had notified that owing to the shortage of switchboard accommodation, the requisition could not be granted at present. _ With reference to a request that street lights be placed on Evelyn road, the Town Clerk advised that the council did not consider the, traffic warranted the expenditure at the present time. Representation having been made by residents living in the vicinity of Karori Park for the establishment of tennis courts on the Park, it was decided to ask the City Council whether they would be prepared to lay down two asphalt courts and the terms on which residents would be entitled to use them.

It was stated that the City Council had agreed to the conversion of an area of .about 14 acres of the cemetery reserve for purposes of a recreation ground and the thanks of residents of the district were due to the council for the decision arrived at. In connection with tramway routes, it was reported that the following resolution, passed by the Executive Committee, had been--conveyed to the City Council : "That the City Council be requested .to proceed as early as possible with the construction of the tram line through Sydney etreet to connect" with the line at Tinakori road; as an expedient for relieving the present congestion ot traffic and loss of time entailed on the, single track on the present Tiriakon road route." A letter from the Town Clerk in reply stated that the proposal for the construction of the tramway had been submitted to Cabinet who had decided that a tramway on this route could not be approved Dealing with this matter'at a later tt S°' ,S W" T- H.'W'etti .--said that they could not take thia reply as disposin S ?J 'he matter, and further inquiry should be made as to the reasons for the decision arrived at. The president, Mr W ;V m ■E drewV endorsed Mr- Hildreth's remarks. It appeared to him that access to Karon.was being deliberately blocked and they could not let the matter drop at that. The motion was carried unanimously.
