"FOLLOW-UP" PLAN

RURAL MONEY HARD TO GET

COST OF RAISING RADIUM . FUNDS.

"There is a spirit prevalent that Wellington should not ask the country districts to help in this matter (the Radium Appeal), and it will be necessary to take further steps from this end if the necessary quota is to be raised in the country. Carterton and Featherston ask that a follow-up letter be sent to ; all people on the telephone exchanges*"

The above passage is taken from the report of the Secretary of the Radium (Kadiation) Appeal, Mr. G. Mitchell, on the recent visit made by ,Dr. Ewen and himself to the Wairarapa, where they addressed meetings at Featherston, Carterton, and Masterton. "Committees," stated the secretary, "are being set up in all these places, but up to our visit no effort had been made." A resided of Masterton handed the secretary a cheque for £10, which was handed on to the Mayor of,Masterton to help the Masterton i collection. The matter was before a meeting of the Radium (Radiation) Appeal Coramittee.last evening, when the' Finance Committee reported: "In connection with the general appeal throughout the country districts, the committee is of opinion that something more will require to be done to obtain the country's quota towards the fund, and recommend that a follow-up letter be drafted and sent to all people on the country telephone exchanges, estimated ■to cost about £80." ,

It was decided to send a follow-up letter to all who. did not respond to the first appeal. The first appeal was sent out to over 10,000 addresses. Business men in Wellington and all people on the country telephone lists received it. And this it only one item in the secretarial work that has been performed, and which will have to be done again. The secretary, Mr. Mitchell, wrote stating that he would pay back into the (fund the money : which the committee had proposed to pay him for his services. The letter was received, all members present expressing the highest appreciation of the onerous and valuable work performed by Mr. Mitchell. The Finance Committee reported that the office expenditure so far incurred "has been kept down to the lowest minimum possible." It was announced that the funds collected and promised to date stalled £2698 11s lid, including amounts of £100 each promised by the Wellington Harbour Board and the Wellington Licensed Victuallers' Association.
