The Minister of Health (the Hon. Sir Maui Pomare) is expected to return to Wellington from the North on Monday.

Mr. George H. Harbroe, who has been on a holdiay tour of Australia, returned to Wellington by the Ulimaroa to-day. Signor Lucien Cesaroni returned to Wellington from the United States by the Tahiti to-day.

Strand, took occasion to congratulate the borough on having had one of its councillors selected as Commissioner to the Empire Exhibition. On behalf of the members of the legal profession practising at the Petone Court, Mr. R. C. Kirk bore testimony to-day to • the esteem in which Sub-In-spector A. S. Bird was held, stating that he was imbued with the highest traditions of a police officer. He was noted for his tactful dealing with the public, and with the legal profession for his considerable knowledge of the law of evidence. That this would be a prelude' to further promotion was the wish of members of the legal profession. Sub-Inspector Bird replied.

Mr. Arthur Hoby, who has been for thirty-nine years the treasurer of the Vivian Street Baptist Church, and also filled many other offices, and Mr. W. H. George, were farewelled at a large social gathering in the Church Hall on Monday evening last. Mr. Hoby is leaving shortly for England, and Mr. George for Australia. The Rev. F. E. Harry presided, and eulogistic addresses were given by the Bey. M. W. P. Lascelles, secretary of the Baptist Union, and by Messrs. C. Cathie and T. H. Wilson. Handsomely-bound and inscribed "copies of the Scriptures were presented to each guest, who, in reply, gave interesting reminiscences of their long association with the church and the city. Musical items were contributed by Mr. and Mrs. Morshead, Miss Samson," Mr. H. Grigg^ and the church choir, under Mr °c' Collins.
