WALLACE STREET TRAM
HOUSE SHORTAGE HOLDS WORK UP.
The Wallace street tramway extension is apparently temporarily held up, riot for luck of money or desire to prosecute the work, but by reason of the fact that the improvement to the extension route recently decided upon, . has given rise ta complications. In place of the extended line running to tlie full length of Wallace street, and turning by New road and John street to Riddiford street, the plan is now to drive the new length diagonally from Wallace td Tasinan street, thereby avoiding a good deal of heavy excavation iii Wallace street, though a certain amount of excavating work will still be necessary to lessen the climb over the narrow ridge, arid giving a considerably more direct run to John street. The carrying -out of that plan, unfortunately, will mean that four houses will have to be pulled down. Wellington is already short enough of houses in all conscience, and the City Council is loth t 0 turn four families Diit of their lumes, even if the Court should empower it to do so.
