THE TRACKLESS CAR
LANDED IN WELLINGTON.
.The ;. English-made trackless car chassis, which the City .Council is to ;%'}' out on the run between Thprndon and Kanvarra, is now in Wellington, and : the details of "the most suitable body are being worked out, not so simple a matter as it might seem, for what would suit one run admirably would not necessarily suit another, and the firm which is supplying the car for the trial is anxious that the fullest efficiency should be obtained in convenience and comfort of passengers, as well as in actual road running. Present plaijs are for a, one-man body, that is, the motorman takes fares in addition to his driving duties. , ' . Trackless cajrs were briefly referred to by Mr. M. . Cable, Acting-General Manager of Tramways, during his address to the city councillors on Monday. ■ While in England he had'gone particularly into the question of trackless cars, and was rather struck by the Birmingham City Council's decision to purchase'twelve trackless cars as ah alternative to reconstructing a length of line which had fallen off as a result of long wear under heavy traffic. He had been informed that the revenue on the trackless car route'had very considerably exceeded that obtained under the rail car system which is displaced. York also had_ the trackless car system on, some of its runs, but there the cars worked under difficulties by reason of the peculiar lay-out of the city. Perhaps the machine which had been landed in Wellington had rather a long wheel-base, and therefore would, not be easily turned on the Hutt road, added Mr. Cable, but that was not to say that there was any obstacle in the way of its satisfactory operation.
