SINGAPORE BASE
SCHJ.ME IN THE MELTING-POT.
(Received 11th December, 1.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The "Argus," commenting' on the British elections, says that, assuming the Ministry accepts the verdict of the electors as a notice to quit, there will be a complete alteration of the outlook in regard to foreign affairs and of defence. U the Government vacates office, the Singapore base proposal will also go into the melting-pot. It is greatly to be deplored that such drastic alterations, at such a moment of grave danger, were risked. If the verdict means anything it means that in the opinion of the electors the nation's best hope of recovery lies in the restoration of normal tradingTelations with the outside world, and with Europe in particular.
