Certain little touches of humour enlivened the Auckland Supreme Court during the hearing of an action in which an ex-school iaacher sought damages against a clergyman for alleged libel. In his evidence defendant spoke in a low, inaudible voice, and his Honour promptly asked him to give his answers as if he were preaching a sermon. One accusatisu was that defendant had shaken his fist in the face Of. the school teacher's wife. This he e.\J)lained by saying he was prone to gesticulation, and his action must have been misinterpreted (reports the " New Zealand Herald "). A little later, when a witness was called for the defence lie walked quietly into the dock instead, of the witness-box which drew from his Honour the remark that his mistake was not very auspicious for the witness. ■>■

The establishment of a depot for the curing and smoking of trout at Eotorua has been decided upon. The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. R. P. Bollard stated at Auckland on Tuesday that it was hoped to complete arrangements so that fish may be accepted for treatment from Ist December. Anglers who visit Lake Taupo speak in high terms of praise of the facilities offered by the Government for the curing and smoking of trout. The depot which was established some years ago by the Internal Affairs Department, and is under the management of Mr. G. Reid, haa proved a great convenience to fishermen who wish to send their catches away. Representations were recently made that similar arrangements should apply to those who angle in the Eotorua lakes and streams. The work at Rotorua will be in charge of Mr. F. Moorhouse, conservator of fisheries and game. The charge for treating the fish will he 10s a dozen, the.same as charged at Taupo.
