SECOND ANNUAL MEETING

A SATISFACTORY YEAR.

The second annual meeting of the Civic League was held in No. 1 Committee Room of the Town Hall last evening, Mr. •W. S. Wilson presiding over a very good attendance of delegates from affiliated associations and others interested in the league's activities. The league, remarked the secretary, Mr. D. M'Laren, in the annual report, was initiated in August, 1921, and steady growth had since marked its development. Eleven associations were now affiliated. In April last the league took part in the City Municipal Elections by recommending a ticket, with the result that of its candidates fourteen out of the sixteen were elected, four out of four for the Harbour Board, and thirteen out- of fourteen for the Hospital and .Charitable Aid Board The year closed with a credit balance in general fund of £56 17s 6d, and election fund reserve. £65,. a. total'of £121 17s od. Outside of its ordinary working account the league had during the last two years raised, over £1900 for public purposes, and the extent to which the league, had been supported financially in its undertakings indicated considerable public- confidence in the organisation. Questions of better access to the western and eastern suburbs, tramway fares, rates, sanitation, public health, telephone charges, prison sites, uniform municipal voting system, children's playine grounds, town planning, and other matji° P c concern had been reviewed by^ the league, and representations made thereon to the public authorities by correspondence, deputation and conterence A great deal of the civic work of the city was done by special organisations established for particular objects. The league was at all times glad to co-operate with such bodies as it recognised that the advancement of the city must be due to a cultivated public spirit expressed through various activities on the part of organised citizenship. Through its officers and representatives the league had taken part in the work of the following societies and movements : Health Week Campaign, WaF f M? m°nal *>ncl, Blenheim FW Relief Welcome Week, City Advertisin gand Carnival, Boys' Institute, Young Citizens League, War Relief Committee, Plunket Home Committee, Radium Appeal Campaign.
