AUCKLAND, This Day. From an award rate of 2s 2£d an hour, the wage for a, first-class carpenter has risen in some cases to 2s 6d, 2s 9d, and even 3s an hour. The Master Builders' Association, at a meeting last evening, decided upon a maximum wage of 2s 6d an hour for carpenters and finishing hands, to take effect immediately. A maximum rate of 3s an hour was fixed for bricklayers, it being stated that as much as 3s 3d and 3s 6d was at present being paid by some builders, whereas the award wage was about 2s 4£d. In the case of plasterers a further meeting will be held by the Plasterers' Association to fix a maximum rate. The award, it is stated, specified 2s 2id an hour, whereas 3s 6d and more is "being demanded.
