A DARING LEAP

MENTAL DEFECTIVE JUMPS FROM TRAIN. There was an exciting happening aboard the Napier express yesterday afternoon, when the train was travelling at a speed of about 30 miles an hour between Te Horo and Waikanae. A mental defective, who was being brought from Dannevirke to Porirua, in charge of a oonsfcable, suddenly disappeared through a window in the carriage, the constable being unjible '.to stop him. The train was at once stopped, and the constable, on going back along the line, found the man hiding in some scrub. He was uninjured. A motor-car was requisitioned, and the constable took his charge back to Otaki, where the New Plymouth express was awaited. Th« patient was eventually safely delivered into the hands of the authorities at Porirua.
