GOOD SPORT AT KELBURN

LARGE ENTRIES AND KEENCONTESTS.

One of the best evening meetings yet conducted in Wellington took place at Kelburn Park last evening, under the management of the recently-formed Selwyn Amateur Athletic Club. From 6 p.m. until shortly after 7 p.m. a fairly large crowd of spectators was treated to an excellent supply of sport in which an unusually large number of competitors participated. The conditions were ideal, and some good performances were registered. The entries for the 100 yds handicap were so large as to necessitate | five heats, all of which, as well as the final, provided close finishes. The times were just a little too fast for the competitors on the back marks, and indicated that the younger athletes are on the improve. The time for the final was lOsec. A most unusual procedure was necessary in deciding the 440 yds handicap. It is generally recognised that the supply of quarter-milers is not -great, but so many came forward last evening that three heats and a final had to be run—a very rare occurrence. That course was partly necessary on account of the track being narrow at one section ; but tho entries totalled over thirty. The winner turned up in a St.-Patrick's College student, J. Smith, who ran splendidly in his heat and in the final, using good judgment in the latter. Tracy won a heat, but did not compete in the final. The one-mile walk and the three-mile run were interesting, M'lntosh and W. Anderson performing best in the respective events. The 440 yds relay race provided much excitement, and a ladies' va.ee, a. boys' race, and javelin throwing completed an attractive programme. The Selwyn Club ha's every reason to be well satisfied with the success. of its first sports meeting. The officials were as follow : Handicapper, Mr. A. C. Kitto; referee, Mr. A. T. Davies; judges, Messrs. A. W. O. Travers, H. Rose, A de Clifton, W. H. Jones, and A. B Sievwright; call stewards, Messrs. H. Malm and J. Ottaway; timekeepers, Messrs. D. Todd, W. Ballantyne, and C.
