HARBOUR FERRIES

OVER 60,000 PEOPLE CARRIED

LAST MONTH.

The general manager's report to the Eastbourne Borough Council on Friday, 'dealing with the ferry service, showed that the Muritai had earned 37,-. 658 passengers during October, on 93 record trips, entailing a travelling distance of 1395 miles. The Cobar during the same period carried 26,259 passengers on 175' round trips, during which the vessel travelled 2460 miles.

An increase of £245 was shown in the ferry revenue received during the month. The Muritai was running well and economically, and was much in demand for picnics and special trips. The Duchess had been slipped, during which it was found necessary to replace one plate on the starboard side, and test holes had been put through adjacent plates, which were all found'to be in satisfactory condition. The work of erecting the circulation pump was well in hand, and the overhaul of the main engine had been completed. The new boiler had been placed in position on JOth November, and the necessary connections had been made. There was still a great deal of work to be done on the vessel, but this was being pushed on, and it is anticipated that the vessel will be ready in ample time for the Christmas rush.

A new winch had been placed on the Cobar, where its use will facilitate the handling of cargo.

The Harbour Board is making a start within a few days in the erection of a cargo shed on the city wharf, which, when completed, will be an added convenience.

During October the weather had been only moderate, the week-ends being dull. Sunday, 18th November, was the best Sunday in that month on record.
