PEOPLE WANTED
CANADA BIDS FOPv IMMIGRANTS.
(UNITED PKEBS ABSOCUTION.—COPIIUIBt.)
UUBIRAUAN-NSW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) MONTREAL, 23rd November. The^ Ottawa correspondent of the "Star" indicates that Canada will soon become a lively competitor against Australia for immigrants, because she needs settlers to develop the country. The Dominion Immigration Office estimates that 125,000 immigrants will have entered at the close of the calendar year, but a disquieting fact is that the exodus exceeds the influx. For this rea, son the Government is planning an intensive campaign to attract British settlers.
The Immigration Department is endeavouring to secure a reduction in steamship rates, on which point the companies have not committed themselves." The ■Government further intends to remove all entrance restrictions, and to defray to parents the.cost of children's passages. The officials 'hope that by this means the influx in 1924 will be trebled.
