BIG CRICKET

N.S.W. TOUR DEFINITE

LATEST ADVICE FROM SYDNEY.

Definite advice of the acceptance by the New South Wales Cricket Association of the New Zealand Cricket Council s invitation for a team to visit New Zealand this season has been received from Sydney. I t i s s t a ted that the team will leave after the New South WalesVictoria Sheffield Shield match at the end of January, and that the-length of the tour will b e about eight weeks from the-date of sailing until arrival back in Sydney. The New Zealand Council is to pay all the expenses and allowances for twelve players and a manager. Mr. S. bmith, a member of the N.S.W. Cricket Association, refers to the action of the ISew Zealand Council as plucky, considering that a sum of £1900 was lost on the tour of the M.C.C. team to the Dominion last season. , ■

The.selection of the New South Wales team to play in the first representative match of the season has been completed by the selectors, Messrs. C. G. Macartney and W. Bardsley and Dr. L. O. S. Poidevin. The team, which is to play Queensland at Brisbane next Friday, Saturday, and Monday, will be captained by C. G. Macartney, the other members being: A. Mailey, H. D. Hendry, W. A. Oldfield, W. G. F. Brown, R. Bardsley, A. P. Wells, H. Cranney, J. D. Scott, A. Gray, A. Thatcher, and D. Mullarkey. W. L. Berry was unable to make the trip, and his place was taken by Mullarkey. In view of the tour to New Zealand this season, the following comments by the cricket writer of the "Referee" are of interest:—"They are all in fair to good form, and make a very satisfactory combination. If Queensland beats them it will be a splendid performance. The personnel of the team, however, tells us that many men were not available. But even so, the selectors could have done a little better still .by preferring real youth in one or two cases in place of men who have been played often, and have done well, but are too long in the game to have any real possibilities.. On their return, the.leading players will have little time at home before they start for the South to figure in the Sheffield Shield matches."
