AMATEUR ATHLETICS
MEETING NEXT SATURDAY.
Amateur athletics, which were very popular with the public last season, are to be set 'in full swing next Saturday when' the Wellington Centre, N.Z.A.A.A., will conduct the first of a series of afternoon meetings at Athletic Park. Arrangements for- the gathering are now well in hand, and the interest which is already being shown by athletes and the public in the evening meetings points' to a successful start of the more important meetings. There is excellent talent, and the programme is well varied, there being, in addition, to the usual field' and track events, cycles races, and ladies' and boys' events. Notable among the competitors will be R. A. Rose, the wellknown distance runner, H. E. Wilson, the champion hurdler, who is out to obtain a record this season, L. A. Tracy, Bprinter, and the college champion, C. H. Jenkins.
Further importance has been given to the gathering by the decision to start a club competition, for which places in a number of the events will count. This competition is for the" John Dewar Imperial Challenge Shield, presented to the Wellington Centre through the New Zealand agents, Messrs. T. and W. Young. The shield is now on view at Messrs. James Smith, Ltd. It was manufactured by Messrs. Mayer and Keen, and is of excellent design and workmanship.
