U.S. SCHEME TO LENGTHEN
LIFE.
■ The National Health Council—a body composed of representatives of the leading medical 1 and public health organisations in the United Stales— has • started' a campaign- which . it predicts will result in the adding of 20 years : to the average span •of life in America.
The campaign has the endorsement of the United States' Public Health Service, which points out that the average life of Americans during the fifty years from 1870 to 1920 lengthened from 41 to 56, and adds that it is possible now to ensure that- "fifty years from now the.average man will live to be 75, instead of 56, and that he will feel spry enough to enjoy life at' 76— and for a good deal longer." Doctors are agreed that over-eating and too much meat are the main causes of decay in middle age. 1 The council invites every American to submit during the next twelve months to a thorough physical examination by a competent physician. .It aims at inducing people to have themselves thus examined annually on their birthdays, sq tnat the first, signs of breakdown may be detected and remedial aabiU of life and diet adootad.
