FASCINES TO PREVENT SAND DRIFT.

The monthly meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council was held last evening under the chairmanship of tha Mayor (Mr. F. H. Mather), the follow! mg also being present :—Councillors H W. Shortt, C. Hartridge, H. M Jones' E. A. Dawson, C. Bowden, H. J. Levy' and C. A. Marquis.

The general manager's report stated that maintenance work has been carried out in various part 3of the borough. A fascine had been erected at the end of Rata street to prevent sanddrift. Levelling and filling had been done at the junction of Hinau and Maire streets, advantage being taken of some spoil excavated for huilding sites nearby. It was decided to hold a "clean-up" week during the second week of December.

The report stated that a fair stock of coal was in hand, and the sales for October amounted to £77 8s 6d and the expenditure to £45 8s 9d. The receipts since Ist April amounted to £607 0s 9d and the expenditure to £568 2s lid.

Building permits for October amounted to. £180. From Ist April to date 54 permits have been issued, representing buildings of an estimated- value of £19,747, fees paid thereon amountine to £47 155,: - b

It is. proposed.to erect a fascine and form a footpath at the north end of Marine Parade, arid, if possible, to commence the-footpath in Nikau street. The General Purposes Committee reported that necessary alterations had been made to the pavilion. Referring to the proposed water supply, the report stated that after careful consideration ot the engineer's supplementary report in regard to reducing the estimate the committee recommended that Mr. Holmes's original scheme be recommended to the council for immediate action. The committee also recommended the adoption of Messrs. Montgomerie Neilson, Edmunds, and Co.'b report and estimates.

The report was adopted, with the exception that the recommendations in regard to water and drainage were held over pending a report from the consulting engineer on the subject.
