PAINTERS' CONDITIONS
TRAINING OF APPRENTICES.
o Settlement has been reached on a number of points in the dispute between the painters and master painters, who are in conference before the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. •W. Newton). An offer in regard to wages was made by the employers, but it was not acceptable to the union's assessors. The overtime rate was fixed at time and a half for the first four hours, arid double time thereafter. Holidays were agreed to as follow:—New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and the day of the painters' annual picnic. Payment for work done on these days is to be at ■double rates. By mutual arrangement other days are to be substituted in country districts. It was decided that, subject to and pending the Arbitration Court s revision of the conditions relating to apprenticeship, in accordance with tbe provisions of the Apprentices Act, 1923, the clauses dealing with apprenticeship at present in force in the various awards "shall continue in operation. A resolution we( "passed strongly recommending the various painters' organisations, both of employers and employees, to call meetings in the different districts for the purpose of setting up committees under, the Apprentices Act. The sitting is proceeding. It is expected the business will be finished to-day.
