DEATH OF MAORI WAR VETERAN

AUCKLAND, This Day. An old Maori War veteran, Mr. James Shanaghan, died on Thursday. Ho was born in Auckland seventy-five years ago. Mr. Shanaghan witnessed the city's development from a small town. He was on active service during the Maori War, and for his conspicuous gallantry at Taranaki he was mentioned in dispatches. He served in the' Armed Constabulary when a youth of nineteen years of age, and was present at the fight at Te Ngutu o te manu, when Major Yon Tempsky was killed. , Mr. Shanaghan was close to Yon Tempsky when that officer fell, and made a very gallant attempt to rescue his leader, but was himself seriously wounded and was carried, off the field by his comrades. Mr. Shanaghan joined the Government Service, and was for a period at Thames and Coromandel. Subsequently he was an official of the Labour Department, being finally officer-in-charge of offices at Auckland, from which position ho retired ten years ago. He is survived by two sons and six daughters.
