LOWER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL

A meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. Present: Mayor (Mr. W. T. Strand)-, Councillors A. J. HoPbs, D. A. Ewen, E. W. Hunt, A. M'Bain, W. G. Meldrum, J. Mitchell, H. G. Teagle, A. F. Roberta, and L. T. Watkins.

The Plunket Society wrote applying for permission to hold a garden fete on the Recreation Ground on Bth December. It wa» decided to refer the matter to the Cricket Association.

It was decided to serve notice on Mr. Granthara, under the Public Works Act, 1908, to take the whole of his property at the corner of Laing's road and Main street in order that the building b« set back to enable Laing's road to be widened.

Councillors Bobbs, Mitchell, and the engineer were appointed ac a sub-commit-tee to report on footpaths to be topdressed this summer.

The engineer reported that very little patching had been carried out on the roads. The roller and grading plant are still being used on Lowry Bay road, on behalf of the Hutt County Council. This work will, take about another fortnight to complete. The building permits for October constituted a record, being: A block of three shops, £3000; 12 dwellings, £10,095; 2 garages, £150; 2 additions, £160; .3 whares, £105. Total, £13,510.

The inspector reported that houses on the Main road had been numbered as far as the Anglican Boys' Home. In view of the long distances between houses, it would not be of much advantage to number the houses beyond the Home. During the fortnight 69 houses in the borough had 1 been inspected and iound satisfactory. Notices were served on various people in the borough to have their hedges but back from the footpath The librarian reported for the month of October as follows:—Books taken out, 2124; new books added, 5; new subscribers, 4; members who withdrew, 7; total number of subscribers, 310. i The, c°unca considered the proposed loan of £42 000 for' beautifying anHrnproving- the borough, and a loan for fire prevention purposes of £31,620.
