PROTECTION LOCALLY REMOVED,
Sportsmen speak of deer as being excellent for sport, but agriculturists describe the fleet-footed animals in differentterms, and in several noted farming districts, where deer are over-plentiful, the word "curse" is often used. The South Island is more affected by the depredations of deer than is the North Island, and for several months past complaints have been made, coupled with pleas for the removal of the protection existing on the animals to enable them to be destroyed.
Ihe complaints haye 1 been heeded by wie Government, and in an interview today with the Hon. B; F. Bollard (Minister of Internal Affairs) a "Post" representative was informed that it had been decided to remove protection on deer in certain areas within the following acclimatisation districts, where the animals are m great numbers, and have been committing damage to property :-Nelson MarlWough, North Canterbury, West-land, Otago, Waitaki, Southland.
