SUSPECTED THIEVES

"EXCITEMENT IN CUBA STREET.

An exciting chase after a suspected jewellery thief took place in Cuba street about 5 o'clock last evening, the offender finally being brilliantly collared in approved Rugby style by a young man who happened to be'in the vicinity. - It appears that shortly. before this occurrence two heavily-built men approached Mr. T. H. Coltman, the proprietor of^ a jeweller's, shop in Cuba street.-asking him to purchase a piece "of suiting- which they had in a bag. They persuaded "him to take the material to the rear of the shop to show to his wife, but en route he luckily happened .to glance back through the glass door and noticed the pair helping themselves to jewellery from the window. Calling for help, he succeeded in cornering one of the intruders and, leaving him in the charge of some people in the shop, followed the other man down the street and paw him enter the Imperial Hotel. He came out minus his overcoat, but this did not put the persistent jeweller off the scent, for he chased the suspect, who was finally apprehended as previously mentioned, the pair being taken into custody by Detective Jarrold. When the men appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court, to-day on a charge of stealing jewellery to the value of £8, Detective Eevell. in asking for a remand for one week, remarked: "We have every reason to suspect that these men are Australian criminals." The remand was granted, bail in each case being fixed at £200. The names of the defendants were given as Charles Marchall, 34 years of age and a nativo of South Africa, and David Thompson M'Gavin, 42 years of age.
