A REPORT ON PROGRESS

WORK OF THE COMMITTEES

REDUCING OPINIONS TO PRACTICE.

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPIRIGBT.I (AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received 2nd' November, 8.30 Ji.m.) LONDON, Ist November. Senator Wilson (the second Australian delegate), in an interview, said that both the Imperial and Economic Conferences had already disposed in principle .of the majority of the subjects included in their agendas. The work of translating those opinions into praclical form had been remitted to about a dozen committees, which included many experts, both of British and.of the Dominions. Senator Wilson is a member of eight committees—those oil migration, group settlement, importation of raw materials from the Dominions, importation of live stock, exportation of pedigree stock to the Dominions, workmen s compensation, State enterprises in relation to private enterprise, and reciprocity in the enforcement of judgments and arbitration awards throughout the Empire. He explained that the last of these matters was sub-1 ject to local conditions in the Dominions, States, and provinces. It would be entirely within their discretion whether they sanctioned the enforcement of decisions and awards made in other Dominions, States, or provinces. Regarding workmen's compensation, the purpose was to secure uniformity, principally in reference to maritime "labour. It is understood that Senator Wilson found himself in a minority of one on the committee on food and raw materials, when he endeavoured to secure the adoption of Mr. Bruce's policy for the licensing ■of imports, but he withdrew bis opposition in' accordance with the general understanding that there would be no minority reports.
