HUTT RIVER BOARD

At, tho meeting, of the Hnt't Kiver Board on Wednesday, the engineer (Mr Lfung-Meason) reported having inspected the river on tho 23rd and 26th. On the westemiaido the long weir recentIL. 6™ j-.-at H°"'s™ w a satisfactory oondUion. The channel on the east side has very satisfactorily deepened and widened itself. Very soon it will be capable of carrying bo much of the flood discharge that the overflow on the weir will be reduced to the minimum, for' which it _w M designed. From Huse's' to the vicinity of Evans's there is'nothing requiring attention. He&e the stream of the river has taken a still more threatening direction on to the re-cently-constructed protective works than It showed when last visited. It is evident that something in the nature of a diversion of the stream must be undertaken if these works are to remain secure^ They should build a weir commencing at the end of the old short groyne near Andrews's stables, and extending right across the shingle bank and the nver stream to 'the gorse island, to a point about one chain upstream, nearly opposite Evans's house. The total length of this weir would be 560 feet but of this total length 380 feet would be on a shingle bank; and 6'nly. 180 feet in the stream at normal level of the river. Another weir of 400 feet should be placed from ihe downstream end of the old part of groyne 17 to *h« upstream end of groyne 18, which wo^i turn the stream into the western channel The cost would be:- Huse's weir, £175; groynes 17 and 18, £218. Consideration of the report was held over till next meeting.
