ON THE FIELD

WELLINGTON TECHNICAL COLLEGE

ANNUAL SPORTS MEETING.

An illustration of the success which is attending the advancement of the athletic aide of school life was afforded at the Basin Bcserve to-day, when the students of the Wellington Technical College engaged in their annual amateur athletic competitions. The occasion was a notable one for the students, and their appreciation of the encouragement which is being given to them to become propSrly developed physically was shown in the spirit with which they entered into the various competitions. The weather unfortunately marred the gathering to ■ome extent, a strong northerly wind 'being unpleasant for spectators as well as competitors. The numerous contests were keenly contested, and in most cases toere were large entries, although all the ooys and girls attending the College did not take part. "We have not every boy and girl in the school competing," remarked the director, Mr. J. H. Howell, 'and that is what we aim at." The college is making, good progress on the athletic field, and from the interest which is being taken in such gatherings as that held to-day it is likely that the time will come when every boy and girl will be competing on the field of sport. Today s gathering was efficiently managed by the College staff, the officials being as follow .-—Referee, Mr. J. H. Howell; judges, Misses Robertson, Johnson, bimpson, M'Kelvie, and Messrs. Enting, graham, Eager, Evans, and Glendinningj clerk of course, Mr. Walls; starter, Mr. Elks; timekeepers, Messrs. Walls and Enting; girls' call stewards, Misses Forsyth and Lovell-Smith; boys' call stewards, Messrs. Pirie and Byrne.'
