MARINE STEWARDS
DIVERGING WAGES PROPOSALS,-
The marine cooks and stewards' dispute was further discussed between the assessors of the employers and employees before the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. W. Newton) to-day. Consideration was given.to the claims in respect to stewards. The most contentious clauses, as was to have been expected from the diversity of the proposals on the two sides, was that of the monthly wage. The present award rates vary from £4 16s 8d per month for cadets under seventeen years of age to £14 13b 4d for the highest paid workers in the schedule. The shipowners proposed a general reduction of £2 3s 4d per month, and the union sought increases amounting in most cases" to £3 6s 8d per month. The employers' representatives pointed out that despite the fall in the cost of living, the federation was presenting the same demands that were made last. year. After brief discussion, further consideration on the question of wages was deferred. The clause relating to hours of work was also passed by, the union declining to depart from its claim for a reduction from ten to eight hours per day. ' (Proceeding.)
