SHOP EMPLOYEES

ONE UNITED BODY

FEDERATIONS -AMALGAMATE.

Proposals for the amalgamation of the New Zealand Operative Butchers' Federation and the New Zealand Shop Assistants' Federation have been unanimously approved by the affiliated unions in each organisation. The decision is the ultimate outcome of a conference of representatives of the two federations held in Wellington some months ago and marks the first step towards th« consolidation of all the shop workers in the Dominion in one national federation. When the necessary amendments to the rules of the Shop Assistants' Federation have been registered, the unions at present affiliated with the Butchers' Federation will be incorporated under the new registration, theioint body bein" known as the New Zealand Shop As° sistants' Federation. As soon as the amalgamation has been effected, overtures will be made to the grocers, hairdressers, chemists, and other shop assistants' organisations with a view to securing their affiliation, thus bringing into existence a united national body of shop employees. The large army of shop assistants will thereby be linked into one corporate body, which will be able to deal more uniformly with award proposals and other legislative matters than is possible under the existing form of organisation.
