STRENUOUS TENNIS
THREE MINUTES BETWEEN SETS.
, r ln accordi «]ce with notice given, Mr M- X Denniston last evening brought before the animal meeting of the New -Zealand Lawn Tennis Association a motion that the rules of :lawn ..tennis as promulgated by the International Lawn lenms federation should be adopted by •& N r Z.L.T.A. as>frbm -Ist November. Ihe rules as laid down by the .International Tennis Federation,'said Mr. Denniston, did not come into force until Ist fi?nU^T 1924 'and the sugg«tion that the- N.Z.L.T.A. should adopt the rules as from Ist November was to avoid one set for half the season and the new set after the New Year.
The meeting was fully in accord with the motion except with regard to that clause of the new rules' providing for a ten minutes rest between sets. The chairman, Mr. J. C. Peacock, strongly protested against the idea of a player taking, so long a. spell,, for tennis was a test of. endurance as well as one of skill, and a man who could not see his full game through without "a shower, a rub-down, and any other amount of special attention." did not deserve a win against a player who was fit to carry right ahead. Several other speakers ..expressed "their full / agreement with' the views~e;icpressed. hy Mr. Peacock, one delegate-likening the' ten-minutes- spell between, sets to a ten minutes spell after the fourth mile in a five mile" race, arid j>n ,the question; being put to the vote, the general motion that the International Tennis Federation's rules' should come into force on Ist November was adopted, with an amendment to tile clause particularly discussed 'that three minutes' spells only should be observed under New. Zealand, rules.
