MOTORING MATTERS
WELLINGTON AUTOMOBiLE CLUB
MORE MEMBERS WANTED,
Speaking at the annual meeting of the Welling!?" Automobile Club, held last night, and at which twenty-five members were present, the president, Mr. C. M. Banks, said he hoped that before long the club would have a clubhouse of its own, such as motorists had in other countries. , He also urged that more motorists should join the club. There we. . between 5000 and 6000 motorists in Wellington, yet not more than 10 per cent, belonged to the club. That was not very satisfactory. Mr. Banks expressed satisfaction at ■ the fact that the Day's Bay road was now to be put in order, and then voiced the regret of motorists at the Motor Vehicles Bill not yet being passed by Parliament. Hitches had occurred over the matter, and he believed that the Government had not gone ahead with it last session on -account of its fear that it would be made a party matter, which was a risky thing for the Government with its present small majority. However, he thought the Bill'would go through next year. The club, said Mr. Banks, had been successful in .getting freights on cars reduced. That had been achieved after many years of striving. Mr. S. G. Nathan seconded the president s motion for the adoption of the report and balance-sheet (details of which have been published), and referred to the excellent work done for the club by Mr. A. N. Field, and the compilation of the year book and road guide T>y the secretary (Mr.'H. J. Stott). The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Mr. Banks-suggested that the incoming .committee should urge the City Council to reverse the rule regarding.the i parking of cars. Cars should be allow- [ ed to be parked for at least an hour in any part of the city; except in places where they were prohibited. The present bylaw would be hopelessly obsolete as the number of motor-cars increased. It was decided that the new committee ' should be asked to bring the question before the City Council. Several machinery amendments to the rules moved by Mr. A. N. Field were agreed to. On the motion of Mr. R. Leslie Jones it was resolved to urge the City Council to appoint additional traffic- inspectors. Officers were elected as follows:— Patron, His Excellency the Governor-! General; president. Sir Joseph Ward; committee, Messrs. C. M. Banks, A. N. j Field, B. L. Donne, F. Goldberg, T. A. ! Munt,.S. G. Nathan.-J. Curtis, A. J. Toogood, H. Amos, and Dr. Harty; secretary, Mr. H. J. Stott; auditors, Messrs. Watkins, Hunt,.and Wheeler.
