NOTES AND COMMENTS

(«I "m tAJICIILOT.")

Mr. "William Hume has sufficiently recovered- from his recent illness to leave the private hospital in Wellington and return to his home at Martinborough. Unfortunately, he will not be at Riccarton to see Inferno race.

Another batch of North Island horses engaged at Riccarton were shipped South last night. T. F. • Quinlivan took five, J. Gravestock four, W. Hawthorne took Vagabond, J. Brown Rational, and F. W. Fitzpatrick Kilbird.

Cheer Up has been-sent home to his owner's farm for a spell, and will therefore not fulfil his engagements in the hurdle races at Riccarton.

At Melbourne, Egyptian Flower, pwn.ed by J. M. Cameron wag beaten half a length by Steliform (White Star—EUnore), who was ridden by E. O'Sullivan, who won the Melbourne Qip on Sister Ohve. J, Hofnery rode Egyptian Flower, by Egypt' or Finland—Mint. According to "Cardigan," of the Sydney "Referee," who witnessed the race, Egyptian Flower was the best thing beaten he has seen for years. Egyptian Flower wa§ bred by- Mr. T. H. Lowry, and prior to the Melbourne race had only run second in a maiden race at Menangle.. The inclusion of the names of Kilochra in the Auckland Welcome Stakeß, and Soliform and Bugle Note in the Great Northern Guinea*, after, final payment w»» probably an oversight, which will benefit the, Auckland Racing Club's finances to the extent of about 25 sore. In a letter to a "Wellington friend by the Tahiti yesterday, G. Price, the New Zealand trainer, speaks in favourable terms pi Rapine's prospects for the Melbourne Cup. Quite a number of horses whose names appear among the general entries for the C.J.C. Meeting are reported as unlikely to make the trip South. They include Listowel. Cheer Up, Suggestion, P«nelephon, Royal Divorce, Merit. Bonecto, Crucelle, Quiescent, Chrisna, Slump, Bonnie Heather, All Gold, Matareka, Helen Winkie, and others. Easingwold, who. ran second in. the Caulfleid Cup to Wynette, who was in receipt of 321b in weight, and is holding his own in weight-for-age races in Victoria, is owned in West Australia, where he was bred. ■ He is by Eaton Lad, an imported horse by Orvieto from Hush, from Bahloo, by Malster'from Enaweena, by Grafton. A full brother to Easingwold, a year younger, was named College Boy, ' ■ Mr. Howard "Booth (president of the Carterton Racing Club) had the assistance of some hard-working honorary officials on Saturday. Prominent among them were Mr. W. C. Deller, clerk of scales, a position his father filled for many years, and Mr. W. S. Baskeville, who again rendered good service at the number, board.

Stream will be the only representative 01 Mr. W.H. Ballinger on the opening day at Riccarton.' Axle wa3 allowed to forfeit his engagement. Pilliewihkie and Paiestrina, according to a Riecarton track waterier, are considered the most likely of the Southern contingent to aucceed in the New Zealand Cup.. ..-.,. . ..,- „ „., ._ Sunny ' Spec (Sunny' Lake—Kinssle) scored another win in a division of tlie Flying Handicap, at Ascot on the 20th. Ei^hteenpence finished, close up to the placed division.

Trentham stables are well represented in the minor events at Pahiitua. Among the names appearing in the lists are Eunshot, Sponte. Proclaim, Manchester, Zero Hour, Lady Waimangu, Idanoe, Black Rod, Ren© Mavis, Martinique, Bayana.

A. M'Cormac, Rational's pilot, put in an appearance at the Carterton Meet* inc. but did not do any riding. Mr. "Vivian Riddiford journeyed up to Oarterton to. see -Glimpse, (the imported filly by Blink) make her first »ppearance, but owing to the state of the track she was allowed to stay in her box. Two other Trentham representatives that went up but did not run were Idanoe and Martinique. Karutahi was second favourite for the Electric Handicap at Carterton, which race he won twelve months ago. His poor display w»s caused by the breaking of a blood vessel. When Kaiwarra won the Mona Nursory on the middle day at .Caulfield, he wm sent out first favourite in a big field. On the concluding day of the meeting M, T. M'Grath ran second in the Moora Welter with El Capitan, who was beaten half a head in limn 41sec.

Bonecto and Matareka are not to go to Eiccarton, but will be seen out at Pahiatua the following week. A'number of the Trentham racecourse »taff visited Carterton on Saturday, and foregathered with Mr. J. M'Glashan, with whom they were associated for •bout fifteen years during the latter'g residence at Trentham.

. Mr. \v. E. Bidwffl informed.the writer at Carterton on Saturday that if Suggestion shows any form in the Great Northern Guijieas he will stay at Ellerslie for the Great Northern Derby. M. "Williams goes South to-morrow with Mr. F. S. Easton's pair. Rouex and Kalakaua.

Plantross, winner of the Fourteen Two*Handicap at Kensington on the 17th inst, wag sired by imported Planudes (St. Simon—Lonely), one of Messrs. Robertson's Victorian importations. Planudes is the sire of Mies Kearney, dam of the, American champion,: Zev. Tanadees was none the worse for the two races he had at Trentham. Trainer J. Sullivan takes him South on Thursday next to fulfil engagement* at the C.J.C. Meeting.

Mr. W, J. Jorgenson has disposed of Paula to Mr. W. H. Edwards, of Wellington. The Patronatus filly will continue to be trained by J. Sullivan at Woodville.

The first meeting between the two unbeaten colts Kilocra and Inferno'in the Welcome Stakes should be one of the draw cards of_ the C.J.C. Meeting. Judging by their performances over fire furlongs, at Trentham, there is not a great deal between the pair. Both colts are owned in the Wairarapa, although trained out of the district.

Vagabond will be Mr. W. R. Kemball's only representative on the opening day at Riccarton. B. Burgess is taking Bonetter and Martian Miss, who are not running on the opening day, down on Wednesday. ' > Patuki, who had to be withdrawn from his Riccarton engagements through getting his foot under a fence while running in a paddock, is nearly quite right again, and was on the track at Hastings yesterday rooming. Kilwa (Kilbroney—Dirinia) won a division of the Kensington Handicap on the 17th inst., and ran ten furlongs in 2min 1238ec.

With Musketoon, N. Cunningham won the big race each day at Poverty Bay, and 360 soys in stakes. That -would cover the expenses of the trip with --four horses. On his Gisborne form Musketoon must be given a chance in the Mitchelson Cup with 6.12. two stone less than he won with on Saturday. Importer failed again on Saturday in a Maiden Hack Handicap, and is 'proving an expensive purchase. Backers did not jret their money back when Drawbridge (Bridge of Earn —Hasty Flight) ran soc«&d to Startle in the Jurenils Sta,ke.a.

Whin Bock (Rock Flint—Petite Soeur) was among the unplaced division in the same race. The latter run* in the ownership of Dr. Ring, who won a race on the same course last autumn with Pebble 11.

A. Atwood goes South to-night with Sir Fanciful, who is "engaged in the hurdle races at Riccarton.

Startle, who was successful on each day of the Poverty Bay Meeting, is a three-year-old, filly by Flying Start (San Francisco—Fleetfoot), who won races in the colours of his breeder, Sir George Clifford. ; Tapora, dam of Startle, was the last progeny of Lady Cuisine (Cuirassier—Ladybird), who had a number of progeny by different sires. , Kitchen Maid (by Soult) and Serbia (by Multifid) were about the best of them. Tapora is also dam of Scotch Mixture.

J. W. Lowe .is going South on Wednesday with Blue Socks.

Although Jovial failed to win a race on either day at Poverty Bay, Cuthbert Morse took a stake on. the second day by the aid of. Prowler (Good Night— Tigerine). Good Night (Boniform— Dreamer) never raced, and went to the stud early.

R. D. O'Donnell left for South yesterday with Mr. J. B. Reid's two-year-olds KiUi and Lady Uru, who are engaged at Riccarton.

There are eighteen! left in the New Zealand Cup after- final payment. The horses that declined ' the engagement were: Insurrection, Sunart, Admiral Codrington, Prince Ferouz, Helen Rufus, Alabama Crown Star, and Counter At-' tack. Chimera was allowed to drop out of the Stewards' Handicap in favour of Peneus, who showed' good form at Riccarton as a two-year-old. Mr. W. Higgins has decided to send Auckland to Riccarton, and the horse will go South to-morrow night. He is in both the Spring Plate and New Zealand Cup, and will take his place in the big race if a suitable rider can Be obtained.

Although Merry Day did not accept for the Mitchelson Cup, it is reported^ that she will contest the King Edward Memorial on the concluding day of the Auckland Meet-ing.
