WORKING MEN'S CLUB.

Very little progress has been mads with this club's annual chess and draughts tourneys during the past few weeks, owing to the extensive alteraftions that are being made in the club'a premises. The matter of playing telegraphic matches against the Auckland Working Men's Club and the Nelson Chess Club has, for the same reason, had to be held over till next year. A league match against the Wellington Chess Club's B team is scheduled for next Saturday and a draughts match against the Watersiders' Club for the following Saturday. An endeavour is being made to arrange a cliess match against a combined team from the other local clubs The Jewish Club, the Commercial Travellers Club, and the Federal Club all have some strong chess players, and it is believed that the Wellington Club Wellesley Club, .Central Club, Civil Service Club, and Returned Soldiers' Club could each contribute a useful quota, to the combined team.

WELLINGTON SOUTH CLUB. The tourney for the championship of this club has ended in a tie, Messrs. A. W. Gyles and D. Purchas having each scored 4 wins and 1 loss. They will consequently have to play off in order to decide who is to represent the club in the "champion of champions" tourney that is to be held later in the season under the auspices of the Wellington Chess League. The play-off will probably consist of three games Mr F. K. Kelling, one of the vicepresidents, is organising a team to play at Masterton during the Labour Day-week-end. The first round of this annual fixture is set down for decision on Saturday evening, and the second round on. the forenoon of the Monday (Labour r „lwe;v e Players have promised to mako the tap, and four others are hopeful of being able to take part in what promises to be a very enjoyable outing
